Cats Sail past Lakers 11-4
The West Genesee Wildcats boy's varsity lacrosse teamed cruised to their second win 1-0(2-0) of the season with an 11-4 drubbing of Class C foe Skaneateles Lakers down inside the Bowl at Solvay Geddes High school. An annual meeting for both teams that usually turned into a nail bitter showed no signs early of being any different as both offenses sputtered only to be backed up by solid defense.
West Genny struck first 1-0 at 9:16 with the help of a favorable deflection from the stick of senior midfielder Brian Griffin. Griffin found some free real estate to the right of the Laker goal, charged to the cage and fired a pass the was redirected to senior Wildcat midfielder Mark Cometti who scooped the ball up then stuffed it by senior goalie Bill Delaney.
Down a goal the Lakers then began to dominate the remainder of the first quarter only to be stymied by the stellar play of Wildcat senior goalie Dan Mckeon. Mckeon turned aside the Lakers first serious threat when he used his midsection to stop a point blank crease attempt.
Junior Laker attackman Kyle Doctor was the next to try and figure the McKeon puzzle at 6:57 only to be stuffed while flying airborne through the crease. Not to be out done by Mckeon, Delaney used a little of his keeper magic at 5:00 by turning aside a right handed side arm rocket fired directly from the slot by Wildcat Junior midfielder Kevin Courtney.
The Lakers had one last chance in the first quarter with just 35 seconds left when senior attackman Dan Hunt snuck through the Cat defense only to be met by Mckeon on the door step.Taking his cue from Hunt, Wildcat senior sophomore attackman Collin Donahue then went toe to toe with Delaney and bounced a shot past the Laker goalie before getting drilled to turf giving the Cats a 2-0 lead with just 10.5 seconds remaining.
Then second quarter saw the Cats begin a man down as senior attackman Dave Osier drew a penalty at the end of the first quarter. Skaneateles went right to work getting off two quick shots, but the Genny defensemen held their ground forcing each shot to sail wide.
With both teams at equal strength the Cats looked to increase their lead when Courtney found senior attackman Jeff Ryan alone in front at 10:53 but it was Delaneys turn to stop the Cats again. Genny continued their man-down mastery of the Lakers as the vocal Laker backers seemed to have gotten inside the head of the officials helping to lead to several questionable calls. But the short handed Cats rose to the occasion as Mckeon blanked junior midfielder Pete Elliot twice.
As had happened at the end of the first quarter the Cats repaid McKeon's efforts with a 3-0 lead with 2:39 left in the half. Once again it was Brian Griffin driving to the goal before dishing off to senior attackman Tim Spillett who put it past Delaney.West Genny midfielder Mark Cometti opened the second half the way he began the first with his second goal of the game unassisted at 11:19 to give the Cats a 4-0 lead.
With the game about to slip from their grasp the Lakers awoke, scoring the next two goals, the first by junior attackman Kyle Doctor at 9:24 followed by Hunt's tally at 6:52 to cut the lead in half 4-2. But it was Cometti again for the Cats answering at 4:57 with his third goal of the game with an assist to Spillett, followed by senior midfielder Andrew Vecchio with just 19 seconds left to end the third quarter up 6-2.
The third quarter began with the Cats pulling the plug on the Lakers as Brian Griffin made the score 7-2 at 10:13 the first of three Genny goals in a span of just 55 seconds.
Donahue followed at 9:33 taking a beautiful cross cage feed from junior midfielder Rob Chamberlin, leaping in the air and redirecting the ball into the goal putting Genny up 8-2.
Cometti capped the period with his fourth of the game taking a feed from Osier who's redirection left Cometti one on one with Delaney before burying the ball in the twine for a 9-2 lead. Skaneateles tried to mount a brief comeback with two goals in the fourth by Hunt but they were answered by Ryan's second of the night with 1:44 followed by Vecchio's second with an assist to Courtney with just 54 seconds to go to close out the game 11-4.
