Wildcats Knock
Knights Off 14-3
The Wildcats kicked off their 2005 season in style
with a trip to visit
cross-town rivals, the Henninger Black Knights on Wednesday,
March 23rd.
The 'Cats weren't too friendly guests either as they
jumped on the Knights
early and never looked back, coasting to their first
victory of the season
behind senior middie Brian Griffins four goals.
Genny wasted little time in putting Henninger away
by punching in three
quick unanswered goals within the first 3 minutes which
left the Knights
reeling. With Griffin contributing 2 goals straight
from the face off and a
stonewalling defense, the 'Cats looked good from the
outset. But despite the
early lopsided lead, both teams appeared a bit rusty
as evidenced by the
frequency of turnovers early in the contest. The 'Cats
closed out the half
by amassing a 10-1 lead going into the half.
The second half saw coach Mike Messere substitute
freely as all players saw
playing time as the poise, precision and style of West
Genesee dominated on
this day. Junior Kevin Courtney contributed offensively
and defensively and
saw extensive playing time as did other newcomers Sophomore
attacker Colin
Donahue and junior attacker Roby Farchione.
The victory marked coach Messere's 604th victory and
their 10th straight win
in defense of their 2004 NYS Championship. It also
marked the debut of
Genny's Aussie Connection with Junior Rob Chamberlain
jumping into the mix
as well as Ryan Barber, Genny's first freshman in many
years, both
contributing to the effort. The Wildcats also welcomed
back junior defender
Jaren Weopple to the starting lineup after recovering
from a 2004 injury.
