Cats Make Hawks See Red 17
- 6
The West Genesee Wildcats continued to cruise at home Wednesday night with a
17-6 win over the Central Square red Hawks. The win was the Cats 13 of the season
and 22nd in a row.
Genny wasted little time getting on top when senior middie Brian Griffin found
rope with a smoking right hander with just 28 seconds gone with an assist to
senior middie Mark Cometti for a 1-0 lead. The Red Hawks did answer the
Cats with their first goal 1-1 at 9:06 when sophomore middie Garret Lazor caused
a turn over on a clear and then beat senior goalie Dan McKeon. With the game
tied Griffin tried once again to give the Cats back the lead by sheer will alone.
Griffin maneuvered through the Hawk defense, beat junior Red Hawk goalie Aaron
Plyter with his shot only to have it sail away after hitting the cross bar. Griffins
next attempt, a bouncer on the doorstep was snuffed by Plyter.
The Cats went ahead after a time out with a goal by senior attackman Tim Spillett
who was wide open in front of the goal with an assist to freshman Ryan Barber
at 7:08 for a 2-0 lead. Cometti and Griffin clicked again at 6:12 with Griffin
salting away another right handed blast for his second of the quarter at 6:12
and a 3-0 advantage.
Senior attackman Jeff Ryan added his first at 4:47 when he snuck out from behind
the goal beat Plyer from close to range to increase the Red Hawk deficit to 4-1.
As out manned as Central Square was they continued to scrap early and halved
the Genny lead when junior middie Ian Murphy knocked Ryan down in the Hawks defensive
end, took the ball the length of the field running past several would be Genny
defenders and tucked a shot over Mckeon's right shoulder for a 4-2 game with
3:54 left to go. The Cats retaliated with five of the next six goals beginning
with Ryan's second with an assist to Spillett with 1:57 to go to make it 5-2.
Barber then netted his first with an assist to Spillett for a 6-2 lead to end
the first quarter scoring with just 58 seconds to go.
Genny opened the scoring in the second quarter with two straight as Cometti netted
his first from Ryan just 47 seconds in for a 7-2 advantage. Then senior middie
Tim Griffin found the range for his first and the Cats opened up an 8-2 lead.
Once again it was Murphy for Central Square as he snuck a left handed shot in
the lower corner of the Cage and the cut into the Genny lead 8-3. Spillett
ended the scoring for the Cats as he cut to the crease and got a pass from senior
attackman Dave Osier who was behind the goal with 6:02 to go in the half and
a 9-3 lead.
The third quarter saw the Cats light up Central Square for six goals and put
the game totally out of reach as Ryan, Cometti and Brian Griffin each netted
two apiece. It began by Cometti sandwiching his second and third goals of the
game around the Red Hawks Sean Jennings to give the Cats 11-4 lead. Then it was
Ryan and Brian Griffin as they took turns trading goals back and forth that finally
sent the visiting Red Hawks staggering with a 15-4 lead, which led to running
time on the game clock.
The Cats final two goals of the evening came off the stick of senior middie
Tom Collins sewing up a 17-6 victory for the Cats.
