Cats K.O. Cougars 7 - 4
The West Genesee Boy’s Varsity lacrosse team 0-0 (1-0) kicked off their
2008 season on the turf at West Genesee stadium with a 7-4 victory Saturday against
the Downington East Cougars. Downington were the winners of the EPSLA 2007 title
with a 21-3 record along with the Keystone Cup given to the best highschool lacrosse
team in Pennsylvania.
A hardy crowd of supporters from both teams looked on in the deceivingly sunlight
stadium that was nullified by bitter winds which made game time temperature hover
in the mid 20's. But it was the visitors from the South who were hot early as
the Cougars used a patient offense testing the Genny defense before midfielder
Rocco Pilero netted a goal at 7:01 to make it 1-0. The Cats knotted the score
1-1 at 4:15 when senior attackman Ryan Barber slipped behind his defender took
a pass from senior defenseman Ben Waldron, spun and buried it in the Cougar goal.
The Cats opened the second with three unanswered goals to take a 4-1 advantage.
Junior attackman Jordan Rodgers made it 2-1 with an unassisted goal at 11:16
Sophomore ‘Cali’ John Glesener introduced himself to New York State
lacrosse with a goal at 7:22 assisted by senior captain, midfielder Luke
Cometti for a 3-1 lead. Junior midfielder Ryan McConnell made it 4-1 at 3:02
with an unassisted tally.
Downington was able to cut the lead in half 4-2 with just 13 seconds to go on
a goal from attackman Dylan Hoff took a feed from fellow attackman Garret
Meadow.
The third quarter began junior attackman Jordon Rogers netting his
second goal 5-2 with an assist to senior attackman Mike Fetterly at 6:14. Downington
answered back 5-3 when attackman Dylan Hoff took a pass from Pilero at the 6:40
mark. Wildcat Senior defenseman Ben Waldron increased the Cats lead 6-3
with a stellar solo effort, as he cleared the ball just past midfield on the
far left sideline, picked up a loose ball after it was jarred from his stick
then slung a low shot into the net with 4:11 to go. Rogers ended the third quarter
with his third goal of the day with an assist to junior attackman Ike Hopper
with just 36 ticks left on the clock for a 7-3 lead.
The final quarter saw a lone goal by Downington at 7:17 when attackman Shane
Sturgis scored with an assist from Pilero to end the game 7-4.
West Genny’s first win of the season was keyed by a smothering defense
led by junior goal keeper Steve Mahle who back stopped the Cats with 18 saves,
several of the point blank variety In front of Mahle, Waldron who controlled
both sides of the field, juniors Jack Conboy and Joe Fazio and fan favorite at
long stick senior Jack Kennedy also contributed to shutting down East’s
potent offense. |
