Cats Limp Past Cougars 3-1
The West Genesee Wildcats
captured their seventh 2-0 (7-1) win of the season
with a 3-1 decision over the Corcoran Cougars at Corcoran
stadium. The score was indicative of an inept Wildcat
offense that failed to perform against the Cougar zone,
and a Cougar team that just failed to perform, period.
Genny’s lone marker of the half came with 3:40
left in the first quarter 1-0 on a goal by senior attackman
Matt Lebduska converting an assist from senior attackman
Garrett Ryan. The Cougar’s only goal of the second
quarter was scored by Corcoran’s James Cathers
to knot the game at 1-1.
The third quarter remained scoreless with several members
of the Cougars team holding the ball for over four
minutes at a time, limiting the Cats possessions and
grinding the game to a halt.
The final quarter saw the Cats offense get into a set
rhythm and take the lead 2-1 with 11:14 to go when
senior captain, midfielder Luke Cometti cut to the
net, took an assist from ‘Cali’ John Glesner
and gave the Cats the lead. It was Cometti again with
7:03 to go, but this time faking a shot from the top
of the crease, and instead passed off to Lebduska who
converted to make it 3-1. With just under seven minutes
to go the Cougars moved away from the stall game and
had several good attempts, the first by Gathers who’s
fake pass fooled a Genny defender, then unleashed a
point blank shot which junior goalie Steve Mahle smothered
at the top of his crease.
Two minutes later it was Mahle again stepping up, when
a Corcoran attackman split two Cats, but once again
was turned aside on the doorstep as Mahle went low
to deflect the ball wide.
As strange a game as it had been it was the final 22
seconds that optimized the oddity of the whole affair,
when the Cougars called time-out and sent a player
limping behind the Genny bench and down the sideline.
The player feigning injury, limped down the track till
he reached the corner cone in the Wildcats offensive
end then stepped back onto the field awaiting play.
However Freshman coach Clark Martin had watched the
entire “Show” alerted
Messere and Deegan who promptly told the referee, and
it was illegal substitution, game over with the Cats
eking out a win.
