Cats Turn Out The Lights
on The Stars 11-6
The West Genesee Wildcats (15-3) ended their 2008
regular season with an 11-6 victory against the Cicero
- North Syracuse North Stars at the Cicero middle school.
The first quarter saw both sides trade goals, but
it was Genny who took little time getting on the board
1-0 at 11:10 when sophomore middie ‘Cali’ John
Glesner took a pass from senior co-captain Henry ‘Luke’ Cometti,
and used the natural turf to rocket a bouncer past
CNS goalie Anthony Puma. The Northstars knotted the
game at 1-1 with 5:18 left on an unassisted seeing
eye goal by the Stars Lloyd Hamilton on a shot that
snuck between junior Wildcat goalie Steve Mahle and
the left post. Cometti retaliated with one of his patented
right handed cannons with 3:36 to make it 2-1. CNS’s
Jim Haney would answer 2-2 with just 1:12 to go with
a shot past Mahle under the cross bar. But it was the
Cats with the final shot of the quarter when junior
middie Ryan McConnell sped down the left sideline and
skipped a bouncer past Puma with just nine seconds
left for a 3 - 2 advantage.
The second quarter saw an unanswered four goal run
by the Cats with Glesner adding his second, 4-2 on
a bouncer with an assist from Cometti with 6:51 left
to go. Genny went up 5-2 with 3:23 left when senior
middie Tim Besio, found senior middie Owen Alberts
in front for the goal. Senior attackman Tim Fetterly
netted the Cats next, 6-2 when junior middie Jim Marks
passed back against the play, finding Fetterly wide
open for the goal with 2:34 to go. The Cats ended the
half with a fine hustle play as junior attackman Jordan
Rogers saved the ball on the side line, found Cometti,
who found Besio in front for a 7-2 half-time lead.
West Genny continued its run with their fifth in a
row as Mahle cleared to Besio who made an acrobatic
one handed grab at midfield, looked up and found senior
co-captain attackman Ryan Barber who did the rest and
the Cats led 8-2 with 10:42 to go.Haney followed with
his second for CNS making it 8-3 with 9:18 left. With
8:40 to go it was Besio drawing a double team and finding
Cometti open to increase their lead to 9-3.
CNS made a mini run at quarters end 9-4 when Sean McCaffery
found himself wide open in front of the Cats goal with
3:40 left. The Northstars followed up with their fifth
of the evening on an unassisted goal by Mike Debotis
with 1:04 remaining.
Glesner opened the final quarter with his third 10-6
of the night at10:16 when Besio inverted behind, beat
his man and dumped it out front. Mcaffery would cut
it to 10-6 with 9:29 go with his second of the night,
but Genny answered on the ensuing face-off when Glesner
won the draw, dished to Fetterly who found a wide open
Barber, who zipped it by Puma for a final of 11-6. |
