Wildcats Tame Tigers 9-3

Coming off last weeks triple overtime win at Baldwinsville, the West Genesee Wildcats got things back on track with their 11th win of the season with a 9-3 victory (42nd in a row) over visiting Bishop Timon St. Jude. The game was played through an almost steady sideways and biting rain that made things even more inhospitable to the Tigers from Timon (2-2) who traveled from the Buffalo area to take on the 'Cats for the second year in a row.

It didn't take long for the motor to kick in for the 'Cats as they advanced the opening faceoff upfield. Senior middie Kevin Courtney lit it up first when he took the ball from the right corner of the restraining line and mapped a direct route to the cage. Courtney then bounced in a right-hander past Tiger 'tender Jeff Conroy for a 1-0 advantage at the 10:56 mark. The Tigers took the draw and went on a patient 4 minute possession in an attempt to even the score which junior Wildcat goaltender ate up when they made their move. Junior middie Joe Pompo took a pass from sophomore middie Ryan Barber and took off from outside the restraining area straight on to the goal very reminiscent of his game winning goal against the Bees four days earlier. Pompo then ripped off a shot that resulted in a 2-0 advantage with 7:16 remaining for the 'Cats. Junior attacker Collin Donahue got into the mix when he cut from the left backside of the cage and bounced a shot past Conroy for the 3-0 lead with 2:48 left in the period.

Genny capitalized on one of many Tiger penalties when junior middie Tim Desko was on the receiving end of a ball that touched the crosses of six different 'Cats en route to a 4-0 lead with 9:41 remaining. Ryan Barber bumped that lead out to 5-0 in a man-up situation when Collin Donahue found him streaking in off to the right of the goal and Barber notched his first goal of the evening with 5:20 to go.

Courtney sparked the 'Cats in opening the third period when charging in the same route he took to start the games scoring and hit senior attacker Chris Schmidt with a pass as he camped out on the door step to tally his only goal of the night at the 10:06 mark. Coach Mike Messere then began to mix up his line ups with various combinations on the attack and midfield lines to give some of the starting groups a chance to rest and thaw out. The Tigers finally got on the board when middie Spencer Mallia cut in from behind the left side of the goal to place a bounce shot past Galloway to make the score 6-1 with 6:50 remaining. Sophomore middie Luke Cometti pushed the lead back to six when he cut right then left after starting from the right restraining line and unleashed a left handed shot that found the left corner of the net for a 7-1 advantage. Timon answered back with 59 ticks remaining when middie Dan Krug hit the net to cut the score to 7-2.

The Tigers took that momentum into the fourth when middie Brendan Donavan placed placed a feed from Andrew Caldiero off the right upright to make the score 7-3 a little over a minute in. Collin Donahue notched his second goal of the game with 8:13 to go whipped a right-hander from ten yards off to the left of the goal to bump the lead out to 8-3. Junior attacker Brian Donahue got in the scoring mix off a fast break by the 'Cats when a Galloway save advanced to Ryan Barber who found Donahue straight on to tally the final score of the evening and the 9-3 win.
