Wildcats Spear Spartans

The West Genesee Wildcats continued their winning ways on a brisk Saturday afternoon with their 5th victory of the season over visiting the East Syracuse Minoa Spartans.

The Wildcats got on the board off an early fast break which ended with junior attacker Collin Donahue hitting senior attacker Chris Schmidt with a pass which he banked off the left upright for a 1-0 lead nearly two minutes in. Sophomore Ryan Barber advanced the lead at the 8:29 mark with a dodging move from the right side of the net and buried a shot to make the score 2-0. For much of the remaining quarter and picking up where they left off on Thursday night against Liverpool, the 'Cat offense couldn't seem to convert off numerous forced turnovers by the stingy defensive unit. Trip after trip, the Wildcats struggled to maintain possession or finish with turnovers of their own. With 1:43 remaining junior attacker Adam Mazzoni fed Collin Donahue to the right of Spartan netminder Chris Ehde where he threaded a needle as he took a nasty check across the mid-section. Schmidt made the Spartans pay as the quarter came to a close as he slapped down an attempted clear from the crease by Ehde which he then promptly deposited for a 4-0 lead.

One minute into the second Schmidt fed from behind to fellow attacker Mazzoni who was camped out on the crease. Mazzoni then tossed in a top right corner shot to advance the lead to 5-0. One minute later the 'Cats found the scoring touch yet again as sophomore middie Luke Cometti hit Collin Donahue who went horizontally airborn across the front of the crease to rip an ankle high shot to push the score to 6-0. Off the ensueing face-off, sophomore long stick middie Ben Waldron picked up a Tim Desko draw and took off upfield. Waldron spotted Donahue about 15 yards off to the left of the cage with a pass that Donahue ripped uncontested past Ehde to advance the lead to 7-0 with 9:44 remaining in the half and tally his third goal of the game. Cometti again teamed up with a Donahue on attack as he strode down the right side of the field and tossed a centering pass to junior Brian Donahue who ripped the net with 5:32 to go and end the half up 8-0.

The second half saw Genny substitute freely with its deep and talented bench. Spartan middie Parker Gazda scored a goal in the third quarter which negated the gritty shutout performance by the Genny defensive unit and goalie John Galloway. Fellow sophomores Cometti and Joe Pompo notched goals in the final two periods to push the final score to 10-1 and solidify the Wildcats 34th consecutive victory.
