Wildcats Shoot Down Northstars With Late Flurry

The West Genesee Wildcats (2-0) captured their 32 straight Class A lacrosse game against the visiting Cicero North Syracuse Northstars with an 8-4 victory at home on an unusually warm 70 degree evening that featured several bouts of rain.

The early part of the game saw stellar goaltending from a pair of juniors the Northstars  Jamie Praino and West Genesee's John Galloway who ended the game with 18 and 17 saves respectively. Galloway was tested early by CNS's junior attackman Nick Lococo who banked a point blank shot off his helmet at 11:19.Then at 10:37 followed with a nice dodge move to shed a Genny defender, only to be stuffed by Galloway at close range. However the third shot did not prove so fortunate for the Cats as the Northstars turned a Genny turnover in to the first goal of the game 1-0 at 9:31 when junior Jeff Gilbert used a nice left, right, left series of stick moves to beat his man and tuck the ball past Galloway. The Cats finally began to warm up on offense with just under five minutes to go, but Praino slammed the door on five straight Wildcat shots giving CNS a 1-0 first quarter advantage.

Early in the second quarter the Cats used a man up pushing call to tie the game 1-1 on a goal from junior attackman Adam Mzzoni with an assist from sophomore middie Luke Cometti. Genny threatened again at 7:24 when junior attackman Adam Mazzoni's shot glanced off Praino then hung up in the air behind the goalie before dropping in the crease just short of the goal line. Not to be outdone Galloway followed Praino's exploits with two back to back stops one on  Lacoco, then snared a bounce shot by sophomore middie Steve Ianzito. Collin Donahue followed with two tests, the first at 3:35 which Praino passed with flying colors snuffing Donahue's spin round attempt. However Donahue bested Praino on his next effort taking a Mazzoni backside feed on the crease and one timing it into the goal for a 2-1 lead. Cicero would knot the score 2-2 with just 40 seconds to go with the help of a West Genny penalty when junior attackman Nick Blumer ripped a bullet over Galloway's shoulder.

The third quarter saw the Northstars take the lead 3-2 at 8:02 as Lococo finished off a pretty fast break that began with a save and nice outlet pass from Praino.
Once again it was Collin Donahue with 3:36 to go scoring his second goal of  the game to tie the score at 3-3 with an assist from Cometti. The Northstars ended the quarter with a flurry as Galloway stopped senior attackman Mike Broadhead, then followed with a spectacular stop on junior middie Jeff Gilbert who spun, twisted then dove headlong while firing a shot only to have Galloway reach high and defelected the shot away. With the game still in the balance the Cats used a three goal run in a two minute span to finally give themselves a bit of breathing room.

The fourth goal giving Genny a 4-3 lead came by way of a Cometti right handed blast from 20 yards out at 7:51. Junior middie Joe Pompo made it 5-3 at 6:26 when he placed his running  left hander past Praino off stick side. Sophmore middie Ryan Barber followed suit at 5:20 with a nearly identical shot giving the Cats a 6-3 advantage. Less than a minute later at 4:36 Collin Donahue snared a pass from senior  defenseman  Jaren Woeppel and released the ball while leaping towards the goal and watched as it found its way in the cage giving the Cats a 7-3 lead and Donahue's third goal of the game. The Northstars chipped away at the Genny lead  7-4  with a goal with 1:39 remaining, but Barber followed with his second of the game putting it out reach with his second of the night giving the Cats and 8-4 victory.
The Cats were also led by a strong defensive effort from junior defender Chris Aubertine and senior defensemen Jaren Woeppel,Ben Watkins and Mark Kelly.
Junior middie Tim Desko also helped the Cats with a dominating performance at the face-off x.
