Wildcats
Advance To Sectional Semi's
The West Genesee boy's varsity
lacrosse team opened up their second season with a
Sec.III Class A quarterfinal game against the Auburn
Maroons 14-4. West Genny took an early lead 1-0 when
senior middie Kevin Courtney took a deflected pass and
redirected the shot into the Auburn net with 11:22 left.
The Maroons first chance would come with 10:50 to go
with Cats senior defenseman Jaren Woeppel serving a slash
penalty. But Genny's junior goalie John Galloway came
up big as he stuffed a diving Auburn attacker with a
save right at the edge of his crease. However the ensuing
clear was disrupted and Auburn's Matt Chadderdon took
advantage tying the game at 1-1 with 9:44 to go.
The Cats were quick to answer at 9:31 on an acrobatic
goal 2-1 from junior middie Tim Desko as he launched
himself goal-ward while firing a left handed shot into
the bottom left hand corner of the cage. Auburn's Chadderdon
nearly tied the game at 8:44 when he used a double
swim move to beat two Genny defenders, but was met
by Galloway who deflected the shot off his right shoulder
then outraced all players to gain possession for West
Genny. The remainder of the first quarter saw both
teams struggling to find consistency to no avail as
the score stayed 2-1.
West Genny did manage to open the scoring as junior
attackman Brian Donahue turned the corner off the left
post at 11:22 then dumped his shot past the Auburn
goal Pat Cameron for a 3-1 lead. Auburn's Joe Taylor
answered for the Maroons less than a minute later 10:16
as he slipped several Wildcat defenders and beat Galloway
to the bottom left corner to cut the lead to 3-2. West
Genny added their fourth of the evening 4-2 with 8:13
to go when Woeppel found junior attckman Collin Donahue
alone on the crease. Donahue took the pass and dumped
a left handed shot in the goal while getting walloped
by an Auburn defender. The Maroons would have the last
word of the half when Jack Redmond stuck a shot into
the bottom left corner of the goal with just over three
minutes left in the half which would end with a 4-3
Wildcat lead.
The third quarter began with the Maroon's Chadderdon
looking to change the complexion of the game, but was
stopped again by Galloway who snared his point blank
at the 11:39 mark. West Genny didn't waste the Galloway
effort as junior middie Luke Cometti found senior attackman
Adam Mazzoni who found the back of the Auburn goaliewith
a left handed shot at 11:10 to extend the Cats
lead to 5-3. The Cats continued their roll 6-3 as senior
middie Matt Grogan converted a pass at 10:23 from junior
middie Aaorn Printup. Just over a minute later
at 9:30 the Cats disrupted an Auburn clear and it was
Collin Donahue, to senior attackman Chris Schmidt,
who hit Mazzoni for his second consecutive goal and
a 7-3 lead and an Auburn time out. The Maroon's Chadderdon
would add their last gasp of the game as Chadderdon
added his third with just over six minutes to go to
cut the lead to 7-4. Genny answered with 2:10 left
as Desko netted his second of the game to increase
the lead to 8-4.
The Cats blew the game open in the fourth as Mazzoni
added his third of the game with an assist to Schmidt
as Genny ran a perfect break off the face-off just
six seconds in for a 9-4 lead. With 8:17 left is was
junior middie Ryan Barber converting a Desko
pass for a 10-4 lead. Brian Donahue made it 11-4 with
4:11 to go when he came out of a loose ball scrum and
put his shot into the goal. At 3:07 it was Donahue
again converting a pass from Barber and a 12-4 lead.
The final two goals of the game came unassisted from
junior middie Jeremy Plochko followed by junior attackman
Matt Evanchako as the Cats headed towards the Sec.
Semi-Finals with a 14-4 win. |
