'Cats Whitewash Maroons

The visiting West Genesee Wildcats came up with win number six on the season with a 9-0 shutout of the "host" Auburn Maroons on a gorgeous afternoon at Corcoran High School. Despite the shutout, the inspired play of Auburn in many aspects of the game including time of possession, ground balls and face-offs seemed in favor of the out manned Maroons.

The opening stanza was played evenly and featured tight defensive pressure by both teams punctuated by offensive lapses at the opposite side of the field. It took nearly the entire quarter but the Wildcats got on the board first when junior attacker Adam Mazzoni floated a nice cross crease pass to fellow junior attacker Collin Donahue who banked it off the opposite upright at the 4:20 mark. Mazzoni again served up the assist when this time he hit senior middie Scott Cost 10 yards out who ripped a high shot over the left shoulder of the Auburn goalie to take a 2-0 lead with 2:42 remaining.

The second saw Donahue again tally when senior middie Matt Grogan spotted him the ball and and tucked in against the upright a little over a minute into the quarter. Genny squandered three man-up opportunities in a stretch running from the end of the first quarter into the mid stages of the second before junior middie Joe Pompo bounced in a running shot with 1:52 remaining in the half to push the lead to 3-0. Senior defender Jaren Woeppel seemed to have his way in whatever position he found himself in. From close defensive pressure and takeaways to winning draws at the face-off circle Woeppel seemed to be everywhere on the field and smack dab in the middle of virtually every Maroon attack. The period's scoring ended when Mazzoni again found the open man cutting to the cage. This time it was junior middie Tim Desko, who streaking in from the left hand side deposited the ball in the top right corner for a 5-0 Wildcat halftime lead.

The third quarter again saw a drought in the Wildcat offense with a few too many in- transition chances and opportunities left unclaimed. It took nearly the entire 3rd quarter before Cost tallied his second of the contest with a running right-handed shot tucked against the pipe from 15 yards out to make the score 6-0. Junior goalie John Galloway continuously brushed aside those shots which somehow penetrated the Wildcat defensive front ending up with 18 saves on the day.

The fourth period action saw a nice defensive strip by middie Matt Grogan trigger a Genny fast break with five Wildcats touching the ball as it advanced up field to senior attacker Chris Schmidt posted right goal line extended. Schmidt then quickly zipped a pass to junior attacker Brian Donahue who tossed the ball past the now out-of-position and diving net minder for a 7-0 advantage. Adam Mazzoni was finally on the receiving end when Collin Donahue tagged him with a pass as he crossed pass the front of the cage. With momentum carrying him further away and having to twist his upper body to face the goal, Mazzoni whipped a bouncing shot back towards the net catching the Auburn goalie off guard for a 8-0 lead with 4:51 remaining. Schmidt then found sophomore middie Luke Cometti striding in from the left side where he placed a shot at the feet of the goaltender with 4:01 left in the game to make the score 9-0. Junior middie Matt Evanchek had opportunity to give the 'Cats their fourth consecutive 10 goal game as he ripped in a twenty-yard shot that came a half second too late as the final horn sounded.
